The Rodopi Mountain-Range National Park is located at the central-west massif of the Rodopi Mountain-Range. Its boundary is defined by the north-east slopes of Falakro Mountain and it continues following the north riverbank of Nestos, to the Greek – Bulgarian borders and the mountainous area of the regional unit of Xanthi. The National park, which is considered as the most significant in Greece, features diverse habitats: the Frakto Virgin Forest, one of the most important virgin forests in Europe, the alder forest of Rodopi in Vathirema, the acid peatlands in Elatia and Leivaditis, the waterfalls of Achladorema, the Forests of Tsichla and Haidou, Leivaditis waterfall, Lepida forest, part of the river Nestos, and the two artificial lakes of Thisavros and Platanovrisi.

As of 2009, it has been designated as a National Park, due to the plethora and diversity of rare habitat types and flora and fauna species.
