The Nestos Delta, the point where river Nestos flows into the Thracian Sea, between the settlements of Toxotes, Nea Karvali, and Abdera in the peripheral units of Xanthi and Kavala, is an important wetland of the region. Together with the lakes Vistonida and Ismarida, they form the National Park of Eastern Macedonia Thrace. The wetland also includes a complex of lagoons (Vassova, Erateinos, Agiasmos, Keramoti, Monastiraki) and lakes.

The area is characterized by rich fauna with many mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and birds.

The area is under international treaties for the protection of nature and biodiversity.
