Ash (Lat. Fraxinus angustifolia) is a deciduous tree with large and narrow leaves. It is found in forests by the rivers, in valleys with high humidity, and at an altitude of up to 800 meters. It is widespread in Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe, but also in North Africa and western Asia.
In Greece, it is native in Macedonia and Thrace along the riversides of Evros, in the areas of the Delta of Evros and Nestos, in Porto Lagos, around Lake Mitrikos, in Dadia, in Avanta, but also on the island of Samothrace. Today, the species is threatened with extinction, as many of these once-abundant areas have now been attributed to agriculture.
