Kourbani

Kourbani is a custom of ancient origins in the wider Greek area. People offered animal sacrifices to the gods to appease them and to get blessed omens for themselves. The custom was brought by refugees from Eastern Thrace (Kryonero) in the 1920s. Today, beef with rice is cooked outside churches and is offered to everyone.
