Arapides

A custom with roots in ancient times (the cult of Dionysus) that is revived every year on 6 January in many areas of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, such as Nikisiani, Xiropotamos and Monastiraki.

It was named after the black clothes worn by participants, who form a group named "tseta". From their belts hang large bells. The custom symbolizes fertility, the battle of life and death and the beginning of a new era.
