The European fire-bellied toad (lat. Bombina bombina) is an amphibian, a type of small-sized toad with a wide distribution throughout Central and Eastern Europe. In Greece, it can only be found along the banks of the Evros river. It prefers shallow, stagnant water bodies such as ponds and marshes; as soon as it perceives danger, it immediately dives into the water.
It is named after its characteristic bright orange-red spots that can be seen on its black belly.
