The liberation of Phineus by Harpies

Engraving depicting the redemption of Phineus from the Harpies, Simon Vouet (1683 - 1732)

The sons of Boreas are shown liberating the Thracian king Phineus in this etching. The Harpies run in horror as the winged Boreads, Calais and Zetes, are pursuing them with their swords, having failed to steal Phineus' food this time. Jason and the Argonauts, who are eating with Phineus at the same table, are watching in fear the pursuit of the Harpies. Underneath the painting, there is a caption in Latin with the theme of the scene: "Liberant Phineum Boreae filii a cibi sui raptoribus Harpyis" (The sons of Boreas free Phineus from the Harpies who are stealing his food).
