Maron gives Odysseus Ismaric wine

  • thumb_img

On the main side of the krater Maron is depicted offering Ismaric (from mount Ismaros) wine to Odysseus. To the left, Maron is handing Odysseus, who stands in the center, an askos (sack) that contains the famous wine with which Odysseus got the Cyclops Polyphemus drunk and thus managed to blind him. The two heroes are accompanied by two women: on the right Ampelis (personification of viticulture) holds a horn and on the left Opora (goddess-protector of fruit) holds a wreath in her right hand. The names of the figures are written above them. The painter was probably inspired by a satyr play (type of Attic humorious drama with a chorus of satyrs).
