A sanctuary dedicated to Apollo
In ancient Zone is the temple of Apollo. It is the only, to date, identified sanctuary in Thrace that is dedicated to the god.
With dimensions 9x15m. the temple survives only on its foundations with a platform of three steps. Architectural members were discovered that are not made of marble but of clay and prove that the temple was originally of Ionic order and was built in the 6th century BC.
The church together with two stoa and other buildings are part of a large sanctuary with an area of 6,800 sq.m. as seen from the surviving foundations of the enclosure. The many and important findings testify that the sanctuary was a remarkable center of worship and was in use until the 4th AD century.
Of special artistic value is the trunk of kouros which dates back to the 6th century BC. Of interest are many inscriptions with the name of the god and stone inscriptions with resolutions as well as the inscription with a bilingual public resolution with Greek letters but in the local Thracian dialect.
