Traditional custom that is revived in Kali Vrysi, in Drama, on the last Sunday of the Carvival.
A week before, they gather branches from the mountain and place them in the central square of the village. There, the koupa is set up, one branch on top of the other as high as possible. Then when the night falls the koupa festival starts with dancing and songs. Participants hold torches and go round the koupa three times singing a famouw local song about Macedonia. Then, people light up the koupa on both sides and the night is as bright as day. A large circular dance is set up around the fire to the sound of the traditional instruments bagpipe and dahares.
The fire symbolizes the purification and katharsis so that Lent begins with a pure soul to welcome Easter. The custom is organized by the Cultural Association of Kali Vrysi who offers tsipouro and local dishes.
