Doxato 

Town of in the regional unit of Drama. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It owes its name to its surrounding wide plain (doxato is the spacious room on the first floor in the traditional Macedonian houses with a nice view).

After the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), refugees from Eastern Thrace and Asia Minor settled in the town bringing along the icon of Panagia Pachniotissa. Nowadays, this icon is kept in the church of Agios Athanasios. The town is also known for the massacres of its inhabitants in 1913 and 1941. That is why it is officially a heroic city as well as an honorary municipality. The buildings follow folk classicism, which is associated with the traditional way of life and agriculture. The painted decoration on the ceilings is of great interest. Remarkable buildings in Doxato are the elementary school at the entrance of the town that forms a huge E, the initial letter of the words “Ellada” (Greece) and “Eleftheria” (Freedom), the old and new churches of Agios Athanasios, as well as many houses and tobacco shops.

In 1870, the Educational Brotherhood “Philippi” was founded, with a Reading Room and a bookstore. Doxato is reknowned for its horse racing, an ancient custom.
