An oil painting by the Dutch painter Hendrick ter Brugghen entitled "Slapende Mars" depicts the Roman god Mars, equivalent of the Greek god Ares, as a 17th century warrior who has fallen asleep. His right hand, which is resting on a big drum, supports his head. He is dressed in battle attire, including a helmet, armor, purple short chitoniskos, and a sword in his left hand.

The painting is an allegory of the end of the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), which resulted in the end of Spain's rule over the Netherlands.
