Silenus with billy-goated feet playing the cymbal

Terracotta figure of Silenus with billy-goated feet playing the cymbal from Abdera, second half of the 2nd c. BC

A terracotta figurine of a naked young Silenus with billy goat hooves, ears, and horns was found in the ancient city of Abdera. The hide is tied around his neck and falls backward. He taps the cymbal he's holding with his left hand. The Sileni, as well as the Satyrs and Maenads, were followers of the god Dionysus and are inextricably linked with the Dionysian cult.
