Oil on canvas with Orestes seized by the Furies after the Murder of Clytemnestra, David Scott (1838)

An oil painting from the 19th century by the Scottish artist David Scott depicts the pursuit of Orestes by the Furies after the matricide. He stands in the middle of the painting, holding the sword in his right hand. His dead mother, Clytemnestra, collapses to his right. Three black-clad Erinyes with torches in their hands and snakes around their faces are appearing to his left. They grab the hero by the hand and his reddish himation, terrorizing him with their presence. The servant of Clytemnestra observes the happenings in front of them with fear.
