Dionysus

Marble statue of Dionysus from the Sanctuary of Dionysus in Thasos, 300-276 BC

In one of the two Choragic Monuments that were built in the Sanctuary of Dionysus in Thasos in commemoration of the dramatic games that were held in the theater, a giant-size statue of the god Dionysus was erected. The statue’s inset head is not preserved today and is seriously broken in several parts. His himation fastens down on his hips and falls down, and he wears a panther hide diagonally over his chest. A statue of one of the nine Muses comes from this monument too.
