Ares is present at the birth of Athena

On the right of the scene that decorates this Attic black-figured amphora, the god Ares is depicted fully armed. He wears a Corinthian helmet and shin guards. He holds a spear in his right hand and a round shield in his left. He watches with Aphrodite, who stands in front of him, and Poseidon with Amphitrite on the left of the scene, the birth of the goddess Athena from Zeus’ head.
