Ares Borghese

  • thumb_img

A statue of the war god Ares. Ares is depicted naked, wearing an Attic-type helmet. The helmet was decorated with two griffins, two dogs and palmettes. His left leg rests on a palm tree trunk. He held a spear in his left hand.

The statue is dated to Roman times and probably copies a bronze original made by the famous Athenian sculptor Alkamenes dating to 420–410 BC, which was erected in the Athenian Agora. It belonged to the Borghese family collection from Rome, and it was bought by the Louvre Museum in 1884, where it is exhibited today.
