Latin grammarian of the late 4th and early 5th century, known particularly for a set of commentaries on Virgil. The structure of this work, written before the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West, recalls contemporary critical editions of the classics, while through his commentaries Servius provides not only invaluable information concerning textual criticism of Virgil’s work but also much of antiquarian interest relating to Roman history, religion, Roman monuments and the Latin language.
