Orestes killing Klytaimnestra

On the main side of the sarcophagus, the murder of Klytaimnestra is depicted. To the left, the lifeless body of Klytaimnestra lies on the ground.  In front of which a servant kneels. A Fury stands exactly above them, while a second one is depicted to the right of the scene. She sleeps half-naked, holding a torch and a snake in her hands. Matricide Orestes appears beside her, naked, holding his himation and sword in his left hand. The omphalos ("the navel") of the earth and the tripod can be seen behind, foreshadowing his first purification in the sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi.
