Orestes attacks Klytaimnestra and Aigisthos

Relief on a leg of a tripod from Olympia with Orestes attacking Klytaimnestra and Aigisthos, 6th c. BC

On the second relief panel from a leg of a tripod, the murder of Klytaimnestra by Orestes is depicted. Orestes plunges his sword into his mother's body, thus avenging the tragic death of his father, Agamemnon. To the right of Klytaimnestra, her lover, Aegisthus, tries to flee to escape death. Electra, Orestes’ sister, is watching the scene. The slaying of Agamemnon by Aegisthus and Klytaimnestra is probably depicted on the first panel, which is significantly damaged.
