A scene of Dionysus' upbringing is depicted on the primary side of the stamnos. In the center, a Nymph or Maenad, holds the infant Dionysus in her arms. The god is naked and turns towards Zeus. To the right, Zeus wears a taenia (headband) on his head, a long chiton and he holds a scepter in his right hand. Another Nymph or Maenad, sits on a diphros (stool) under a portico, indicated by a Doric column and an epistylium. She holds a phiale (vase for libations) in her right hand and a thyrsos (stick that ends in a pinecone with ivy and vine leaves) in her left. Both women wear long chitons, himatia, earrings, and a sakkos (scarf) or taenia on their heads.
