On this oinochoe a torch race is depicted. Four young Satyrs are holding torches and running. Αnother Satyr is depicted on a platform announcing the winner of the games with his trumpet. God Dionysus watches the race. As a god, he is depicted noticeably on a larger scale. He wears a long chiton, himation, and an ivy wreath. He extends his right hand towards the athletes, while with the left he holds the thyrsos (stick that ends in a pinecone with ivy and vine leaves). The torch race was a popular sport in ancient Athens and took place during important festivals of the city or on special occasions. According to Herodotus (6.105) the torch race had a great role in Pan’s official cult after the Battle of Marathon.
