Infant Bacchus

Dionysus is depicted in infancy. He is naked and wears on his head a wreath of ivy leaves, fruits and taeniae (ribbons) that fall on his shoulders. He probably held a kantharos (ritual drinking vessel with a distinctive shape) in his left hand. According to the myth, the god was raised by the Nymphs in a cave in Nyssa, away from the jealousy of Hera.
