Both medallions are parts of a much larger floor mosaic which was originally located in the entrance hall of a Roman villa at Daphne, a suburb of Antioch on the Orontes River, the capital city of the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire. One of the two medallions depicts the bust of Dionysus. The god is young, beardless and with long hair. He wears a skin goat tied in his right arm and a wreath with ivy leaves, fruits, and bands in his head. The second medallion depicts the bust of a Silenus or Papposilenus, one of the followers of Dionysus. Silenus wears a chiton, himation, and an ivy wreath in his head.
