On the obverse of a silver tetradrachm from Mende (a city in Pallene Peninsula in Chalcidice) , the god Dionysos is depicted reclining on the back of an ass. He is bearded with long hair, and he wears only a himation that covers the lower part of his body. He holds a kantharos in his right hand, with which he drinks his wine. On the reverse, there is a vine of six grape clusters within a square and around it there is an inscription with the ethnic name MENΔAION (by Mende’s citizens). The city of Mende was famous for its good quality wine, so Dionysos came up as a patron of winemaking.
