Artemis Bendis and Herm

Terracotta figurine of Artemis Bendis. The goddess wears a short chitoniskos tied in her waist, himation pinned in her right arm and a Phrygian pilos (cap) on her head. She holds a simulacrum of a deer in her right hand which rests on a Hermaic pillar. Hermaic pillars, also known as Herms, are stone statues dedicated to Hermes cult. They were consisted of a head and a four-sided stone pillar, instead of a body. They were used for directions, street measurement of distances between rural sites, indicating the borders of agricultural properties as well as religious purposes in cult places.
