Aesthetic Forest of Amygdaleonas Kavala

The Aesthetic Forest of Amygdaleonas Kavala is a suburban forest of special aesthetic and ecological interest, at a distance of 5 km from the city of Kavala. It is an artificial forest, occupying about 28,000 acres and is an ideal setting for recreational activities, attracting both locals and visitors. Unfortunately, in 1985 part of the forest was destroyed by fire.

The most typical inhabitants are the forest of evergreen hardwood trees, alleys, hedges, and groves, as well as an indigenous forest of coniferous trees that is mainly populated with Turkish pines. Other plant species include the downy oak, the evergreen oak, the manna ash, the Jerusalem thorn, the cornelian cherry, the tree heath, the wild olive tree, the Mediterranean cypress, the kermes oak, the European hop-hornbeam, the hairy thorny broom, and the oriental hornbeam. Plants such as the service tree and the Judas tree are also found in the forest.

Moreover, various mammals that are considered important for the conservation of biodiversity in the area find shelter in the forest, for example, the least weasel, the European polecat, the red squirrel, the brown hare, the white-breasted hedgehog, and many others.

The avifauna of the area is also rich, with important species, as here you can watch the Eurasian eagle-owl, the great cormorant, as well as certain migratory species, for example, the Eurasian sparrowhawk, the cuckoo, the lesser kestrel, the European herring gull, and many more.

The forest is a protected area that is part of the NATURA 2000 network.
