The river-god Hebros resting on a ship's prora

On the reverse of a bronze coin dated to the time of the Roman emperor Commodus (180-192 AD), the river-god Hebros is depicted resting on a ship’s bow, facing to the left. To the right rocks and an inverted hydria can be distinguished, whereas to the left a small tree behind the prora. The coin was issued by the Mint of Philippopolis, when the Province of Rhodope was ruled by Quintus Caecilius Secundus Servilianus under the office of Legatus Augusti pro praetore provinciae Thraciae. The information is given by the coin itself, on which we read the inscription ΗΓΕ ΚΑΙ ϹΕΡΟΥΕΙΛΙΑΝΟΥ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ.
