Maron and a bunch of grapes

In the obverse, of this coin the bust of Maron, the mythical founder of the Maroneia city, is depicted to the right inside a border of dots. Two spears can be obversed behind his left shoulder. Right of him there is a bunch of grapes. In the reverse, a bunch of grapes is depicted, a refference to the famous Ismarian wine, and the inscription ΜΑΡΩΝЄΙΤΩΝ.

Η Ψωμά προτείνει την ταύτιση της μορφής στον εμπροσθότυπο με τον μυθικό ιδρυτή της πόλης Μάρωνα. Πρόκειται για έναν νομισματικό τύπο που εισάγεται για πρώτη φορά αυτήν την περίοδο στη νομισματική εικονογραφία της πόλης. Αντίθετα η παλαιότερη βιβλιογραφία (βλ. Schönert-Geiß), όπως και το Corpus Nummorum ταυτίζουν τη κεφαλή με αυτή του θεού Διονύσου και χρονολογούν το νόμισμα στο 100-200 μ.Χ. Εδώ υιοθετείται η άποψη και η χρονολόγηση της Ψωμά.
