rettulerat nato Nestor, at ille mihi.

Rettulit et ferro Rhesumque Dolonaque caesos,

utque sit hic somno proditus, ille dolo.

Ausus es - o nimium nimiumque oblite tuorum! -

Thracia nocturno tangere castra dolo

totque simul mactare viros, adiutus ab uno!

At bene cautus eras et memor ante mei!

Usque metu micuere sinus, dum victor amicum

dictus es Ismariis isse per agmen equis.

Γιατί όλα αυτά ο σεβάσμιος Νέστορας τα είχε αφηγηθεί στον γιο σου, που είχα στείλει μήπως και σε βρει, και εκείνος όλα τα μετέφερε σε μένα. Μου αφηγήθηκε τη δολοφονία του Ρήσου και του Δόλωνα από το σπαθί σου, πώς δηλαδή τον έναν τον πρόδωσε ο ύπνος, και τον άλλο ο δόλος. Τόλμησες - εσύ που τόσο τους δικούς σου ανθρώπους λησμονείς! - να φτάσεις στο θρακικό στρατόπεδο με δόλο μέσα στη νύχτα και να σκοτώσεις μεμιάς τόσους πολλούς με τη βοήθεια ενός! Ήσουν βέβαια καλά προφυλαγμένος και μένα είχες πρώτη στη σκέψη σου! Συνεχώς η καρδιά μου από τον φόβο αναπηδούσε, ώσπου να μου εξιστορήσουν πως νικητής γύρισες στις συμμαχικές γραμμές με τα άλογα του Ίσμαρου.

For old Nestor related all to your son, whom I sent to enquire after you; and he again to me. He told me likewise, that Rhesus and Dolon had been slain; how the one was surprised in his sleep, the other betrayed by guile. You also, my dear husband, alas! too, too forgetful of your family at home, adventured to enter the Thracian camp by stratagem in the night, and, assisted by Diomedes alone, to kill so great a number of men. No doubt you were wonderfully cautious, and did not forget your Penelope before the dangerous attempt. My heart never ceased beating till I heard how you rode victorious through the army of your friends upon Thracian horses.
