Its construction was financially supported by Komotini industrialist Nestor Tsanaklis in 1907 as the Urban School for Boys. Architecturally it is characterized by eclectic elements of the early 19th century. Between 1922-1954, it housed the offices of the General Administration of Thrace and from 1954 to 1972 the Prefecture of Rodopi. Later, the Rectorate of the Democritus University of Thrace was housed until 2000. The latter status of the building remained so that the residents of Komotini call it the Old Rectory.
