Macedonian lyre

String instrument associated with the myth of Orpheus.

The Macedonian lyre is pear-shaped and differs from other types of lyre both in tuning and in playing: players use their fingernails as well as the fingers. We hear the Macedonian lyre mainly in villages of the region of Drama: Petrousa, Xiropotamos, Monastiraki and Pyrgoi. It is linked to the cult of Orpheus.
