Harpies stealing food from Phineus

Attic red-figured kalpis by Kleophrades Painter with Phineus trying to defend himself from the Harpies, 480 BC

On the shoulder of this vase called kalpis (type of a hydria, vase for delivering or serving water), the Harpies are depicted while attacking and stealing Phineus' food. On the left, the old diviner and king of Thrace Phineus sits on a diphros (stool with four legs). He wears a long chiton, a himation and a wreath of ivy leaves on his head. In front of him, there is a table full of meat and bread, which a Harpy is preparing to grab. Phineus raises his hands in despair, trying in vain to prevent the steal. A second Harpy has already grabbed a round loaf of bread and a piece of meat, while a third arrives in a hurry. The three Harpies are represented winged with short chitons. An opened kiste (box) is under the table, with which Phineus food was probably delivered to him.
