Phineus and Boreads

The scene depicted on the krater is the Boreads (sons of Boreas, the Northern wind) comming to save the Thracian king and oracle Phineus from his punishment. Phineus is depicted as a bearded blind man. He is seated on a throne in front of a rich table. He wears a long himation, and he holds a sceptre in his left hand. With his right hand he waves to one of the two Boreads, who just arrived. The latter is depicted winged. He wears chiton, chlamys and endromides (soft boots). Behind Phineus stands a young man with two spears, ready to attack an enemy to the right.
