The cave Byzantine church of Agioi Theodoroi
The small cave located north of Alexandroupolis, on the road to the settlement of Avanta, was converted into a temple during the Byzantine years. On the first level the pronaos is formed, while higher up the main church which has a built iconostasis. Frescoes are preserved on the walls of the cave as well as on the iconostasis which, based on their style date in two phases, to the end of the 11th century and to the 12th and 13th century.
The main theme of the illustration is the Circle of the Virgin Mary, thus it is possible that the church was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It remains unknown when it was dedicated to Agios Theodoros (Saint Theodoros), as the cave temple is known to this day. Access to the cave by a landscaped path and modern steps.
