Mountain of the regional unit of Drama. It is the natural border between the regional units of Drama and Serres. In ancient times, marble quarries and iron mines were located in the area, whereas quarries are still operating here.
Menikio is one of the most important mountain habitats in Eastern Macedonia with an intense-relief landscape, alpine and subalpine meadows rich in flora, beech forests, the forest of centenarians chestnuts, and other plant species scattered in the mountain: firs, European black pines, prickly junipers, oak trees, hornbeams, willows, grey alders, but also shrubs, as for example, dog roses, bilberries, and many more.
The fauna is also rich. The list of mammals in the area includes a variety of species, for instance, the wild boar, the European badger, the roe deer, the hare, and the wolf - among others. The wild horses living in the mountains are the most characteristic and impressive species of the area. Moreover, the mountain habitat offers shelter to many bird species including the short-toed snake eagle, the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon, the Eurasian eagle-owl, the τσαλαπετεινός, the σπίνος, the white scavenger vulture, the lesser kestrel, the Eurasian sparrowhawk.
