In the Paleolithic cave of Aggitis
The cave of Aggitis, also known as Maaras, is about 15 kilometers long, and it is entirely road mapped. It is naturally decorated with huge white and red stalactites. Various animals find shelter in the cave, while it is the only exploitable river cave in Greece.
Archaeological excavations by the Ephorate of Paleoanthropology-Speleology testified the human presence and use of the cave during the Paleolithic (34,000-27,900 years before today) but also the late Neolithic period and the beginning of the Bronze Age (4th-3rd millennium BC). The findings from the cave are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Drama.
