An important Byzantine temple in Drama
Squeezed between the modern blocks of flats, the small church of Taxiarches was built in the early 14th century. It may have been built as a burial chapel for the wife of Emperor Andronikos II, Yolanda (renamed Irene) of Montferrat. The historical testimony of the empress that she died and was buried in Drama in addition to the small size of the building led to this case.
Both the masonry of the church on the exterior and the frescoes of the Palaiologan period in the interior make the monument a remarkable attraction for the visitor of Drama. It should be noted that the church during the 19th century underwent various changes, many of which no longer exist as the church was restored to its original form after the restoration of 1973.
