The only virgin forest in Greece and one of the few remaining in the whole of Europe. It is located north of Paranesti of Drama. It has an area of approximately 11,000 acres and is located at a high altitude, just below the 1,950-meter highest peak of the central Rodopi. It has been declared a preserved natural monument since 1980.
Within the pristine forest there are several hiking trails and rest areas for visitors. The route of the local ultramarathon Virgin Forest Trail (VFT) also passes through the virgin forest.
The Virgin Forest crosses the Achladorema which creates impressive landscapes and forms waterfalls.
The forest has evergreen and coniferous trees, hard-to-find flowers, special and rare species that create a unique scene of wild vegetation that cannot be found anywhere else in Greece. It is home to a large population of wild animals and various species of birds of prey.
