Lycurgus attacks Ambrosia

Mosaic floor from Herculaneum with Lycurgus in his madness attacking Ambrosia, 1st c. AD

The Thracian King Lycurgus is about to kill the Nymph Ambrosia. Lycurgus lifts a double axe to strike Ambrosia, who is fallen to the ground, semi-naked. She raises her right hand trying to stop him, while she is about to turn into a vine (she holds a grapevine with her left hand). To her right an animal is running. Behind Ambrosia stands Dionysus with a lance, trying to hold back Lycurgus from the odius crime.
