Lycurgus attacks Ambrosia

Mosaic floor from Delos with Lycurgus killing Ambrosia, late 2nd c. BC

The object is an "emblem" (central scene of a mosaic floor) depicting the Thracian King Lycurgus who is about to kill the Nymph Ambrosia. Lycurgus lifts a double axe to strike Ambrosia who is fallen to the ground. Her metamorphosis (transformation) to a grapevine has began, since shoots of grapewine are sprouting from her body.
