The spur-winged lapwing (Lat. Vanellus spinosus) is a rare aquatic and coastal migratory bird. Its plumage is a striking combination of black, white, and brown. However, its main feature is a spur on each of its wings, which gives it an advantage over larger birds.
This species has a preference for marshes and similar freshwater wetland habitats. In Greece, it is found in the wetlands of Thrace (Nestos Delta). It is worthwhile noticing that every year, the spur-winged lapwing lays four blotchy yellowish eggs, which both parents spin for about 20-24 days.
Today, it is listed among the endangered species.
