Polystylon, a byzantine settlement in Abdera
The settlement of Polystylon developed during the Byzantine period. The fortification of the settlement with a perimeter of about 800 m., includes wall reinforcement and square towers. Two transverse walls divide the first fortified city into two parts and the second forms the Byzantine citadel. Inside the fortification a bath and a cemetery around a small temple with a 12th century dome have been discovered and excavated. Other important monuments are the episcopal church in the type of three-aisled basilica dating to the 9th century and the octagonal baptistery with the built cruciform swimming pool. Tombs that probably belonged to important people of the settlement have been excavated under the floor of the church and around it. The destruction of those temples dates back to the 14th century.
The main cemetery of the settlement is located outside the walls on the west side. There is also a three-aisled basilica that functioned as a cemetery church.
