    Agia Varvara (Drama)
    Church in Agia Varvara Park. According to a local legend, during the Ottoman era, an attempt was made to demolish the church, which was flooded by the running waters of the area and it was saved. Since then, the inhabitants of Drama, on the day of St. Barbara (4 December), light candles, and place them on little boats that float on the lake creating a beautiful sight. Visit Drama

    The capital of the regional unit of Drama, known in the ancient world as Hedonida. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It is built at the foot of Falakro Mount. Important attractions of the city are the Macedonian Tomb, the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia (10th century), the church of Pammegistoi Taxiarhes (14th century), the old Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary (18th century), and the Byzantine city walls. Newer attractions include Agia Barbara Park in the center of the city with springs, ponds, and waterfalls, Anastasiades Mansion (1876), the old Schools (1907), the Archaeological Museum with remarkable findings, the Ecclesiastical Museum with exhibits of religious art, the church of Agios Nikolaos (Eski Mosque or Tsarsi Mosque) built by Sultan Bayezid II and the Arab Mosque (1875). Also, the tobacco warehouses Speerer (a listed building of 1924), Portokaloglou (1904), and Protopappas (1912) are important sights, as well as the 1895 Railway Station. The patron saint of the city is St Barbara. In Drama, various events take place during the year, such as the International Short Film Festival, Drama Dream City, (a Christmas festival), and the Eleftheria events.     Nestos
    The Nestos river is the natural western border of Thrace. Its springs from Rila mountains in Bulgaria, crosses the mountains between Orvilos and Rodopi, and flows along the Thracian Tempi from Stavroupoli to Toxotes into the Thracian Sea. It is 234 km long. From Toxotes to its estuary, at a length of 27 km, the Nestos meets Kotza Orman, one of the most significant riparian water forests in Europe. The Nestos Delta is a wetland of international importance.     Nikiforos
    Village, 15 km away from the city of Drama. It was named after the Byzantine emperor Nikiforos Fokas. The train station of the village is a listed monument. Another sight is the Roman aqueduct, also known as the Bridge of Drama. There is also a prehistoric settlement nearby. After the end of the Balkan wars, Greek refugees from Turkey settled in the village.

    Agia Varvara Park
    Extensive recreation area located within the city of Drama with old, tall trees, lakes and natural springs that keep the whole city cool. Watermills and old tobacco warehouses can also be seen in the park, reminding us that the tobacco trade was once the main source of income for the city.   The park was named after the church dedicated to St. Barbara, the patron saint of Drama.   The park of Agia Varvara is among the 60 best in Europe and participated in the exhibition "Squares of Europe, Squares for Europe" of the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki.   JTI Target (video)
