City which is built in the plain of Philippi. Its name means "free town". Its old name “Pravi” (from the Latin “provia” or “paravia”, meaning above or next to the road) indicates its location, since it was crossed by the ancient “Kato Odos” (Lower Road). It was the main and busiest road coming from the city of Byzantium (older name of Constantinople).
Sights include the old tobacco warehouses of the center, the Cathedral, the two boarding schools, the Public Central Library, the Papachristideion Maternity Hospital (all founded by the Papachristides family) as well as the church of Agios Nikolaos.
