Town of the region of Kavala. Its geographical location, its cultural heritage, next to the archaeological site of Philippi and the prehistoric settlement “Dikili Tas” of the Neolithic era, as well as its thermal baths, have determined the town's identity. The city was named after the water that springs in the area. Refugees from Asia Minor settled after the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922).
