Within the regional unit of Rhodope, between Alexandroupolis and Komotini, and at the west of Ismarida lake, Ismaros is actually part of the Rodopi mountain range. It is a low mountain with an altitude of circa 700 meters. It provides a habitat for a vast array of wild flora and fauna species. The settlement of Maroneia is located on the western slope of Ismaros, whereas, the ruins of an ancient theatre along with an archeological site at the feet of the mountain bear witness to the long past of the area.
