The grass snake (lat. Natrix natrix), also known as ringed snake or water snake, is a non-venomous snake and, thus, harmless to humans, widespread all over Greece. Its body is slender and gray with shades of blue or olive and a yellow stripe on the side of its neck. It can reach about one meter in length, while the female is usually even longer.
The water snake is often found in wetlands, yet not exclusively. It is an avid swimmer and feeds on a wide variety of species, ranging from amphibians to fish, rodents, and other reptiles.
