Xirolimni is a coastal lagoon located near the coastline, close to Arogi village, and Ismarida lake. A sandy strip separates the lagoon from the sea. Xirolimni is one of the five lagoons of the Rhodopes, which form a wetland complex rich in biodiversity. Tamarisks, willows, and poplars occur in the wetlands stretching from the north of Xirolimni, while sea lilies and bellflowers also grow on the beach.
The lagoon is the ideal habitat for many species of aquatic birds, some of which winter here. Also, various predators including the winter grebe, the reed grebe, the osprey, the falcon, the kestrel, the peregrine falcon, and the owl hunt here. In winter, flamingos also migrate to the area offering a spectacular view to visitors to the area from the road.
