Mosaic in Kavala, next to the church of Saint Nikolaos. Its theme is “The arrival of Apostle Paul in Neapolis of Philippi”.
This is the landing spot of Apostle Paul when arriving at the city. Kavala (then Neapolis), was the first stop in Europe for him in 49 AD. Then, he went to Philippi where he founded the first Christian church in Europe.
That’s why the city was later renamed Christoupolis, meaning the city of Christ. The monument is the work of the painter Vlassios Tsotsonis and the mosaics artist Pino Pastorutti.
